This project Chinese Picture Postcards or in  Mandarin (Chinese), MingXinPian, is about what the world perceives, or perhaps what someone else wants us to perceive, versus the potential reality.

I am investigating this concept with pairs of images, diptychs, one of which is a postcard viewpoint while the other explores the things as they are. And in fact, both are not real.

The lead photograph for this project is this JiaShan waterway with the boatman leaving the Hutong village, charateristic of a picturesqe old world postcard, while on the facing shore is the new world, the current reality. He is venturing out on a water path between the two and we don’t know where his journey will take him, or what his destination is.

Best regards, Douglas Stockdale
